Eugene, OR - The No. 59 Saint Mary's Women's Tennis team defeated the Oregon Ducks Friday afternoon, 4-3. The Gaels swept doubles play with each team posting wins. In singles action freshmen Alex Poorta recorded an important win for the Gaels, while senior Stef Ordoveza and junior Marah Calvo also defeated their opponents. With the win Saint Mary's broke Oregon's three-match win-streak, while improving to 3-0 on the season.
In doubles play Marah Calvo and Stef Ordoveza edged the Ducks' Anna Cecilia Olivos and Carmen Seremta, 9-7 at the No. 2 position, while the freshman duo of Poorta and Soper overcame Anna Powaska and Siobhan Cavan, 8-6. The two freshmen stepped up their level of play to win the doubles point for the Gaels, as they were the second team to finish doubles action. Jessica Hoath and Nienke Strijbis wrapped-up doubles play with an 8-3 win over Celine Rolly and Stephanie Macfarlane.
Poorta used her doubles momentum roll right into singles action, as she recorded a crucial win over Anna Powaska, 6-3, 7-5. Poorta defeated the senior Powaska to capture the dual match win for the Gaels, marking the second match of the day that the freshman had defeated her opponent with the Gaels' win on the line.
Marah Calvo and Stef Ordoveza also recorded wins in singles play. Calvo took down Oregon's Stephanie Macfarlane in an easy match for the Gael, 6-3, 6-0. Calvo defeated Macfarlane at the No. 4 spot, while Ordoveza captured the win over Oregon's Mimi Songsermsawas 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
The Gaels return to action as they face Gonzaga in Portland, OR on Sunday, February 9 at 10:00 am.
