Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team split their double header against the San Jose Spartans, as they were edged in the first game 11-10, but came back to win the second 8-5. The match-up marked the Gaels' last regular season outing before conference play begins, finishing with a 13-15 overall mark.
An impressive seven run sixth inning was what the Gaels needed to capture the victory over the Spartans, with the highlight being a three run homer by junior Sadie Dolcini. Saint Mary's began the inning with an out, but proceeded to get their next seven batters on base. Dolcini's long ball brought in the first three runs of the inning, but four more would be scored as the Gaels totaled seven runs, seven hits, on three errors, with three players left on base in bottom of the sixth.
Molly Bergeson earned the win for Saint Mary's, improving her total to three on the year. The senior pitched five innings, holding the Spartans to two hits and no runs, while striking out four. In addition to her solid pitching, Bergeson provided a consistent bat for the Gaels, finishing the double header with a .571 batting average, adding two runs, four hits, and two RBI.
On the day the Gaels were led offensively by senior Sandra Ruezga. Ruezga totaled two runs, four hits, and three RBI, while posting a .571 batting average and a .857 slugging percentage.
Saint Mary's first game against the Spartans was an offensive battle, as the Gaels' 10 runs and 12 hits were not enough to overtake San Jose State. The bottom of the third was another seven run inning for the Gaels, but a five run rebuttal by the Spartans in the top of the fourth would steal back the lead, 11-7. Saint Mary's made one last attempt in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs, but it would not be enough as they fell 11-10.
The Gaels begin Pacific Coast Softball Conference play next weekend, as they host the Sacramento State Hornets in a double header on April 5 at 12:00 PM.
