April 16, 2008

Box Score

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team was unable to take down No. 23 California, falling to the Golden Bears, 5-2. The Gaels started off hot at the plate, but were unable to maintain their offensive prowess, as they scored their only two runs in the first inning. Saint Mary's totaled eight hits and two runs, while committing four errors.

In the circle Megan Galloway had a solid effort, allowing eight hits and no earned runs. Unfortunately for the senior, untimely errors permitted five Golden Bear runs, sealing the win for No. 23 California.

Three Gael batters posted two hits apiece, in Bronwyn Russell, Sandra Ruezga, and Jenna Smith. Russell is currently on a seven game hit-streak, while posting a season batting average of .347. Russell started the Gaels off in the bottom of the first with a single to centerfield on her first at bat, followed up by a Molly Bergeson walk. A sac bunt by Smith advanced runners to second and third, and a sac fly by Chelsea Loftis brought in the first Gael run. The inning continued as Lauren Clark was walked, and a single up the middle by Kat Delpit would score Saint Mary's final run.

California's pitcher, Marissa Drewrey earned the win, pitching the complete game and improving to 23-10 on the season.

The Gaels return to action this weekend in Portland, OR, as they continue Pacific Coast Softball Conference play against Portland State. The two teams are currently tied for second in the PCSC with 5-3 records, making the series a crucial match-up for conference standings.
