Softball Earns Important PCSC Victories

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team earned two important wins in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference as they swept San Diego to improve to 23-23 overall and 9-5 in conference. With the two wins the Gaels have placed themselves tied for first in the PCSC, along with the defending champions, Loyola Marymount. Saint Mary's won the first in the bottom of the seventh, 3-2, while posting an easy win in the second 5-1.

As a team the Gaels posted a .418 batting average on the day, while holding San Diego to a .228 mark. Molly Bergeson led the way for the Gaels, recording a .857 batting average, 1.286 slugging percentage, and .857 on base percentage, including three runs, six hits, one double, and one triple. Bergeson's triple came in the bottom of the seventh in the first game of the double-header, with the scored tied at 2-2 apiece. The senior tagged the three-bagger down the left field line in the Gaels' first at bat of the inning, and was then brought in on a walk-off single by Jenna Smith. The final run gave the Gaels' the win, 3-2, as they responded in the seventh inning to hold off extra innings.

Bergeson also scored the first run of the ballgame in the first inning of the day, as she reached safely on a single to the shortstop. The senior would then steal second, and reach home off a single RBI by Megan Galloway. The second run was scored by Jenna Smith, crossing home on a single down the left line hit by Kat Delpit.

Sandra Ruezga had the second best batting average on the day, recording a .667 mark, including a three-run big fly in the bottom of the third inning. The senior finished the day with a 1.500 slugging percentage, adding two runs, four hits, one triple, one homerun, and three RBI. The Gaels continued to put runs on the scoreboard, scoring in the second and third innings. Saint Mary's would go on to win the ballgame, 5-1, as they improved to tied for first in the PCSC.

Saint Mary's were provided with consistent pitching all day, as Megan Galloway and Maryanne Cronin each earned a win. Galloway threw a complete game, holding the Toreros to six hits and two runs. The right hander struck out four batters, while improving her record to 11-12 on the season. Cronin also pitched a complete game in the second match-up of the double-header, allowing seven hits and one run, while walking one and striking out three. With the win the freshman improves to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in PCSC play.

The Gaels return to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 27 at 12:00 PM in their second double-header against San Diego.
