Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team finished the weekend with a series sweep over San Diego, winning 8-5 and 2-1. With the two conference victories the Gaels move to first place in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, while improve to 25-22 on the season. The conference title will be determined next weekend, as each team finishes the 2008 regular season. Loyola Marymount sits one game back from first place, and will travel to Moraga next weekend to face the Gaels in their final regular season series.
Gael pitching held off the Toreros throughout the day, combining for a 2.00 ERA, with Maryanne Cronin and Megan Galloway each recording a win. Galloway earned the victory in the second game of the double-header, as she pitched the complete game, did not allow an earned run, and improved to 12-12 on the season. The Toreros scattered eight hits in the game, with Galloway striking out five batters.
In addition to her win, the senior posted her first save of the season in the Gaels' first outing, entering in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on bases. Galloway finished the day with a 0.0 ERA, as she did not allow an earned run. Cronin recorded the first win for Saint Mary's, boosting her PCSC record to 5-0.
At the plate it was junior Lauren Clark that led the Gaels in the double-header, tabbing a .714 batting average, adding one run, five hits, one double, and one RBI. Three other Gaels batted above the .300 mark on the day, including sophomore Kat Delpit with a .667 mark. Delpit finished the day with one run, four hits, and one RBI.
The Gaels return to action next weekend, as they face Loyola Marymount in double-headers on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 at 12:00 PM. The match-up marks the final series of the season, and the Gael seniors last appearances at Cottrell Field.
