SMC Post Game Quotes

Post game quotes from head coach Randy Bennett
-- It was a tough game. It was tight the whole way, hard to separate. We did a good job. Obviously we don't want games to get down to those situations, but when you do get to those situations you hope your guys play with confidence and composure. I was proud of our guys in that way. A couple times they could have panicked and lots their composure. I think we got down five and they had the ball and we just hung in and we made some shots. Pat hit a huge shot at the end. I was proud of him. Bounce back after he missed two free throws and then came back hit two free throws and then hit the three. That was impressive. I thought we did a good job on John Bryan. Their guard foster had an outstanding game. We need to do a better job on a kid like that. That was probably the biggest negative. We need to do a better job on a kid like that. We knew he was a good player and he had a great game.

Bennett on Santa Clara
-- I watched a lot of film. They played everybody close. I was trying to sell our guys that this was gonna be a tough game. All week I've been nervous, kind of unsettled about it. We knew Foster was good. Our guys had never seen him because he's a freshman. I told our guys I think he's their best scorer. Anyhow, I thought it would be a tight game. The long they kept it tight, the more pressure came on the end of the game. It was headed that way. We separated early and then we fiddled around like we have for a while. Then we evened up real quick and from then on it was a tight game. We have to get better at handling success in the course of a game.

Bennett on first half shooting
-- I told them at half time, We shot fifteen three's in the first half. I didn't think we played very well in the first half. Our shot selection was bad. We played selfish. We were just to quick pulling the three. Everyone had their look at one. We had guys shooting off the pump fake. We had to park that, put it inside. I didn't think we played real well. A lot of it is due to how they played us. Give credit to them. I thought they did a good job guarding us and they're good. We have to play better. Offensively be more patient.

Bennett on Mills taking the last shot
-- Obviously, I'm pretty comfortable with Patty in that situation. We drew it up for him. He did a good job of setting it up. Omar and Diamon did a good job of setting the screens. You do a lot of preparation to get in that situation once or twice a year. I'm glad we were able to come through. The tough part is hitting the shot.

Quotes From Patrick Mills
- I missed two free throws and there's no excuse there. Confidence and believing that you can make the next one. That time out when we all went in, we knew that we weren't gonna lose the game. As crazy as that sounds, but that's just the way that we're all thinking.

-- We did a great job of covering Bryant. Omar did a great job of knowing his tendencies and what to expect. I think we had a lot of focus on him, because obviously he's a big part of the team. Then, out comes Foster. It's hard to adjust, but to be a great team you have to adjust to those type of things. Including myself, it's hard to do so when he got off well. He's very hard to guard. He was running everywhere in the half court. It was hard to adjust. But that's something I think we'll improve on in the rest of the season.

-- I want the ball. We play these situations all the time during training and I guess it was lucky. That play where I tried to penetrate when there was sixty people in there and I kicked it back to Diamon, that was lucky I think. Like I said, there are things that you need to improve on. It was just lucky that it went out on them I guess.

-- My aunty who I'm very close with back home, she's very ill and is sick in bed. When I let it go, I knew it was good. That one was for her. There was no way that was coming back.

-- I've got no idea to be honest. It felt like I was back playing auzzie rules in Australia. The hard wood is a bit harder then the grass when you land. To be honest I had no idea, who I fell on or what. I feel, got back up. Hurting a lot, but I got back up.

Post game quotes from Omar Samhan
John's big. And he lost weight, but he's still huge and strong and he's a good player. There's no way of getting around it. He's a good player. Coach did a great job on the scout, telling me what to expect, his moves, stuff like that. We covered it pretty well. Just went out there and tried stay out of foul trouble and still bang on him. Years past I've been in foul trouble when I've played against him. Maybe a little too excited, too physical. Tonight I just tried to play within my means.

-- He's there leading scorer and leading rebounder, so I obviously wanted to keep the ball out of his hands as much as possible. Big tribute to our wings and guards because they did a great job balling up, so they couldn't really pass it into him. So it was a team effort.
