
Women's Basketball Defeats Washington State 73-69

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 campaign with a 73-69 victory over Washington State on Friday night at McKeon Pavilion. Jasmine Smith scored a career-high 24 points and the Gaels converted 30-of-36 free-throws. Louella Tomlinson continued where she left off last season, tallying a double-double with 11 points and 18 rebounds.
In the first-half, Washington State went on an 11-0 run to take a 20-9 advantage. Saint Mary did not hit a field-goal from the 18:00 mark, all the way down to the 6:04 mark when Kate Gaze connected on a jumper. SMC was able to stay in the game with its free-throw shooting.
Saint Mary's would end up hitting 18-of-20 free-throws in the first-half as the Cougars led 40-38 at halftime.
In the second-half, the teams would remain close as the last tie (12th of the game) came at the 3:39 mark as WSU connected on two free-throws.
Tomlinson hit two free-throws at the 2:45 mark and Gaze swished a three-pointer to open up a 72-67 lead with 2:04 remaining.
Washington State hit a bucket with 1:12 left to pull within 72-69. WSU had a couple chances to pull even but a turnover and a missed three-point shot ended the threat. SMC's Tomlinson grabbed her 18th rebound and the Cougars were forced to foul with just eight seconds remaining. Tomlinson made 1-of-2 from the line and the clock ran out for the Cougars.
In addition to Jasmine Smith's 24 points, she added eight rebounds and five three-pointers (another career-high). Gaze finished with 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including going 4-for-7 from behind the arc.
Morgan Hatten came off the bench to play 23 minutes and scored four points, all on free-throws. Hatten played great defense, finishing with five rebounds and five steals.
Washington State was led by Sage Romberg with 19 points and Jazmine Perkins with 17 points. Rosetta Adzasu had 13 points and six assists.
WSU was held to just a 33.3 percent from the field. Saint Mary's outrebounded WSU 47-37. SMC had 12 assists on 17 of its baskets, while WSU assisted on 18 of its 23 baskets.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Sunday when it travels to Berkeley to face Cal. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
