The women's basketball team partnered with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), to host a special event for the Zappos.com/WCC Shoe Drive at yesterday's game against Pepperdine.
All fans were encouraged to donate new or gently used shoes to help the Gaels move closer towards reaching their goal of collecting 1,500 shoes for the drive. In return, each fan that was 21 and older, received an entry into a drawing to win a free trip for two to Las Vegas for the WCC Basketball Championships, courtesy of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In all, eighty-four pairs of shoes were collected. Head Coach Paul Thomas said, "We have great fans that are always willing to help support us and all service initiatives that we participate in. Being able to reward one of them with a trip to Las Vegas to come see us play in March is great. The Zappos.com/WCC Shoe Drive is a tremendous event and I am happy that we could help SAAC move towards their goal."
The shoe drive event was part of the women's basketball "Be A Part of It" campaign, which is a conference-wide community service initiative, which encourages fans to come to basketball games and support their favorite WCC basketball teams both on and off the court
The women's basketball team returns to action this Thursday, January 13th, when they travel across the Bay Bridge to take on San Francisco at 7:00 pm.
