CHICAGO, Ill. - Carli Rosenthal grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the buzzer to give the Saint Mary's women's basketball team a 67-65 win over Montana in the Consolation Championship game at the Maggie Dixon Classic in Chicago on Saturday evening.
"Although Carli made the winning bucket at the buzzer and Jasmine hit a big three, several other players made critical plays that led to a fun victory over Montana," said head coach Paul Thomas. "I have tremendous respect for Robin Selvig and his program... beating Montana is a huge win for our team."
Saint Mary's was led by Jackie Nared with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Jasmine Smith added 14 points, including a big three-pointer to tie the game with 51 seconds remaining. Danielle Mauldin added 11 points and seven rebounds, but fouled out with 3:04 remaining on the clock with the Gaels up by two points.
After Montana tied the game with 2:34 left, the Grizzlies made their only three-pointer of the game (1-for-14) while missing the previous 13 three-point field-goals. The shot put Montana ahead 63-60 with 1:57 left. After the teams exchanged hoops, Smith hit her three to tie the game at 65-65.
The Gaels were able to produce a ‘stop' on the next possession as Nared grabbed her 10th rebound of the game with 30 seconds left. SMC chose not to call timeout and ran the clock down as Smith fired away and missed, but Rosenthal gathered the rebound and put in the game-winner in the paint as time expired for the 67-65 win.
The game featured nine ties and seven lead changes in a match-up that was fairly even throughout. Montana had its largest lead of six points in the first-half while the Gaels led by as many as nine points with 10:03 left in the second-half.
Saint Mary's shots 38.2 percent from the field but held Montana to 33.3 percent shooting. Montana held a 44-41 edge in rebounding, but the Grizzlies grabbed 21 offensive boards compared to just 15 by the Gaels. While the Gaels committed 24 turnovers, they forced 20 by Montana. SMC had 13 assists on its 21 field-goals.
The two teams combined for 50 total free-throws as the Gaels converted 20-for-27 (74.1 percent). Nared went a perfect 11-for-11 from the line. Mia Greco had a team-high four assists in just 16 minutes of action. Morgan Hatten grabbed five rebounds in seven minutes while Rosenthal finished the game with four points and two rebounds in seven minutes but had the important buzzer beater.
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 1-1 while Montana drops to 0-2.
