MORAGA, Calif. - Danielle Mauldin of the Saint Mary's women's basketball team has been named espnW.com National Player of the Week, it was announced.
The Gaels played one game during the week of December 23 – 29th, but it was a huge game, arguably the highlighted game of the West Coast Conference opening day.
Mauldin finished the game with 24 points and 23 rebounds (career-high), with 10 of those rebounds coming on the offensive end. She played 43 minutes of SMC's thrilling 79-78 overtime win over the No. 21 Bulldogs (Coaches Poll, No. 24 AP). She sank two free-throws with just over a minute to play, which turned out to be the game-winning free-throws as the Gaels stopped GU on its final possessions.
It was Mauldin's ninth double-double of the year, and second time reaching 20 points and 20 rebounds in the same game.
Charlie Crème, Graham Hays, Michelle Smith and Mechelle Voepel each vote to determine espnW's national player of the week, which is awarded every Monday of the women's basketball college season. Teammate Jackie Nared and Maryland's Alyssa Thomas were also nominated.
Mauldin has also been named the College Sports Madness High Major Player of the Week and the College Sports Madness WCC Player of the Week. The WCC Player of the Week award will come out on Tuesday, after Monday night's WCC action is completed.
Saint Mary's is back in action tonight (December 30th) hosting a strong Portland squad at 6:00 p.m. in McKeon Pavilion. The Pilots have wins over teams including Washington and Oregon, and defeated Pacific on the road in the WCC opener.
