GOLF | Marr Goes Low At Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah -- Saint Mary's freshman Maclayne Marr fired a career-low 6-under par 66 and finished fourth overall at the PING Cougar Classic today at Riverside Country Club.

Unfortunately, since he was playing as an individual, Marr's score didn't count as the Gaels finished third in the 9-team field with a 54-hole score of 7-under par 857. Tournament host BYU ran away with the team title with a 32-under par 832, an impressive 17 strokes ahead of second place Air Force.

Southern Utah finished fourth overall, 10 strokes behind the Gaels at 3-over par. Boise State, Wyoming, Utah State, Colorado State and Weber State rounded-out the final standings. BYU senior Zac Blair earned medalist honors with a 14-under par 202.

Senior Mac McClung led the official Saint Mary's quintet with a 3-round total 4-under par 212 and tying for eighth overall. The Fremont native earned his fifth top-10 finish this season with today's final round score of 1-under par 71. McClung registered 3-straight rounds under par in the tournament, going 70-71-71.

Juniors Alex Bungert and Cody Robinson tied for 11th in the 51-player field at 2-under par 214. Bungert fired rounds of 70-74-70. In today's final round, he registered four birdies in his first five holes to get off to a solid start. The Orange, Calif. native finished with two bogeys and 11 pars in his final 13 holes.

Robinson, a native of Discovery Bay, Calif., was one of 10 players in the field to break 70 in today's final round. He fired a 3-under 69 today to finish at 2-under with rounds of 73-72-69.

Dalan Refioglu, a junior from Foster City, Calif., carded rounds of 73-71-75 for a 3-over par 219 to finish in a 5-way tie for 23rd place. Senior Ben Geyer finished tied for 31st with a 5-over par 221.

Marr, playing as an individual so his scores in the tournament did not count toward the team total, fired a bogey-free final round with six birdies. His previous low as a collegian was a 2-under par 70 in the first round of The Farms Collegiate Invitational, where he tied for 13th overall - also his previous best individual finish as a Gael.

The Gaels will now wait until Monday, May 6 to find out where they will be playing in the upcoming NCAA Regional Championships. The NCAA regional field will be unveiled on NCAA.com that evening at 6 p.m.
