MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The Saint Mary's women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at No. 25 Marquette on Friday evening on the Golden Eagle campus.
They are the Big East champions and a Sweet-16 team for a reason," said head coach Kai Edwards. "They got after us early… we did a very good job in the second-half of relaxing and playing with a lot of trust and confidence in a moment when both of those were hard to find."
The Gaels played even with the Golden Eagles until MU broke through with two scores in the 27th minute, just 26 seconds apart. MU added a third goal in the 33rd minute to take the commanding 3-0 advantage.
In the second-half, the Gaels were outshot by a slim 6-3 margin, taking both of their corner kicks in the second half.
For the match, Caroline Beaulne fired off two shots while Briana Campos, Samantha Dion, Melinda Madden and Mary Fraser also tallied shots.
In goal, Kaeli Schmidt had a busy night facing 20 shots, making nine saves for the Gaels.
In the end we put our team through a four game gauntlet of nationally ranked sweet sixteen teems on the road and we are better for it," said Edwards. "We are looking forward to taking care of business on Sunday."
Saint Mary's is back in action on Sunday for its second match-up of the Marquette Invitational. The Gaels face Loyola-Chicago at 9:00 a.m. (PT).
