MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's women's basketball team led Boston College well into the second half before the Eagles made a late run to steal away the game and hand SMC an 82-72 loss in the season opener for the Gaels.
Saint Mary's built a 13-point second-half lead and led 56-43 with 11:24 remaining. BC, who stayed in the game by hitting 11-of-38 three-pointers, ended the game on a 21-5 run over the final 4:45. The Gaels also ran into foul trouble which broke up some momentum SMC had built.
The Gaels were led by Shannon Mauldin with 16 points, seven rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocks. She led four Gaels in double figures as Hayley Hendricksen added 12 points and seven rebounds, Carli Rosenthal had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Lauren Nicholson had 11 points and five assists.
The Gaels recorded 18 assists on their 24 field-goals. SMC converted 22-of-30 from the free-throw line. BC made it tough for the Gaels to come back as the Eagles hit an impressive 21-of-24 from the line.
The Gaels seemed to have withstood the BC rally once up 13. BC cut the deficit down to 60-58 with 7:39 remaining, but the Gaels responded and went back up by a 65-58 score after Nicholson put in a jumper.
After the final media timeout, the game was tied at 67-67. That's when BC hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions to lead 73-67. The Gaels climbed back as close as 73-72 with 1:08 remaining as Nicholson converted a three-point play.
BC would then drain a three-pointer to go up by two possessions and hit its free-throws to steal away the win.
BC was led by Kelly Hughes with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Saturday when it takes on UC Davis in Davis at 11:00 a.m.
