SAN BRUNO, Calif. – With the announcement of the 2015-16 West Coast Conference women's basketball schedule, the Gaels now know the layout of their path to reach one of their goals.
The WCC slate begins on a Monday this year with the Gaels traveling to San Francisco on December 21st. On Wednesday, December 23rd, the Gaels host their first WCC home game against Santa Clara. The 18-game conference schedule will also wrap-up with the Bay Area teams as the Gaels are at Santa Clara on February 25 and at home for Senior Day on February 27th against the Dons.
The Gaels feature a strong senior class in 2015-16, led by All-Conference honorees Lauren Nicholson and Shannon Mauldin. Hannah Kaser is the third senior who is a sharp-shooter and contributed valuable minutes off the bench, including a pair of free-throws, down by one point, which gave SMC a road win at Cal Poly.
The Gaels will spend New Year's Eve in Provo, taking on BYU which promises to be another battle in the quickly growing rivalry. SMC fell to BYU in the final seconds of the WCC Tournament quarterfinals last year. BYU would go on to win the tournament, while the Gaels rebounded from the loss and advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals by winning three tournament games.
Saint Mary's continues to rise with 131 wins over the last six seasons, a total that ranks 4th in the state out of California schools, including more than traditional powers UCLA and USC. The 131-wins is tops in the WCC during the six year stretch (California schools).
Last year the WCC flexed its muscles as a conference as it sent six teams to the postseason. BYU and Gonzaga made the NCAA Tournament, while Saint Mary's, San Diego, Pacific and San Francisco saw WNIT action.
Saint Mary's also returns WCC Newcomer of the Year Stella Beck for her sophomore season. Beck has spent the summer with the New Zealand Tall Ferns. Playing basketball at the highest level for her native country is something Beck will bring back to the Gaels in the Fall. Mauldin also spent a busy summer playing in the San Francisco Pro-Am League. The senior guard helped her squad win the prestigious Summer League which features many current collegiate and professional players.
All TBA game times will be announced at a later date.
