WTEN | Kozyreva, Ville Lead Gaels on Day 1 of ITAs

Mariia Kozyreva and Aubane Ville earned two wins each in the singles draw and will play in both the singles and doubles Round of 32 tomorrow.

iSTANFORD, Calif. — Saint Mary's had a steady start to the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford this Friday as the team picked up six wins overall, including five in the singles brackets.

The Gaels began their day of singles action with three wins in the Round of 128. Mariia Kozyreva advanced past UC Davis' Shirley Hall who retired in the first set, Clementine Clement took down Caitlyn Frankel of Santa Clara in straight sets, and Aubane Ville came from behind for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory against Portland's Laura Okazaki.

Saint Mary's had four competitors in the Round of 64 as Liesl Pieters drew a bye in the opening round. Kozyreva and Ville each picked up wins and will play in tomorrow's Round of 32. Kozyreva pulled through in a long first set and then capped off her victory with a 6-4 second set. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Ville fought back and earned breezy 6-3, 6-1 set wins to advance.

The Gaels will have two doubles teams in the Round of 32 tomorrow as well. Pieters/Clement advanced in their first round match with an impressive 8-2 win over Dario/Ellis of Fresno State while Kozyreva/Ville picked up a first round bye.
