WSOC | Pilots Navigate Past Gaels in Portland

Saint Mary's dropped their first conference match of the season Friday night in Portland, 3-0.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Saint Mary's (6-5-2, 1-1-1 WCC) suffered their first conference loss on Friday night as the Portland Pilots (9-5, 2-1 WCC) erupted for three goals in a 16-minute span to take down the Gaels, 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's failed to generate much offense in the match as the team totaled just two shots against the Portland net. Anyssa Dominguez and Sophie Santos each had one scoring try in the match. The Pilots also held the Gaels to only one corner kick which came in the first half.

Despite their offensive struggles, the Gaels kept the game scoreless for much of the first half as goalkeeper Maleah Milner recorded two saves in the opening period. With time winding down in the half, the Pilots broke through as Taryn Ries scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season with just four seconds left on the clock. The score snapped Saint Mary's three-game shutout streak and it was the first goal allowed in the team's last 311 minutes.

The Pilots added their second goal of the match eight minutes into the second half as Kimberly Hazlett connected on a cross from the left side. Portland tacked on another insurance goal in the 61st minute thanks to Madison Carter.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
  • "We just got beat tonight. We gave up a goal less than five seconds before the half and it deflated us a bit."
  • "Portland is good and their wide play gave us some problems. We will get back at it tomorrow and focus on Gonzaga."
QUICK FACTS
  • Saint Mary's utilized 19 players during the match.
  • The Gaels were called for 12 fouls compared to 14 for the Pilots.
  • The loss snaps SMC's two-game win streak against Portland.
