GOLF | Gaels Finish 8th at Saint Mary's Invitational

Saint Mary's finished eighth in the Saint Mary's Invitational on Wednesday out of 18 teams.
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Saint Mary's wrapped up their host tournament on Wednesday with a 2-over team score to finish the day where they began, eighth place and in the top half of the 18-team field.
THE LEADERBOARD
Saint Mary's was led by freshman Ryan Grauman who tied for the team's best final round score at 1-under to finish 1-over in the tournament and tie for 20th. Just one stroke behind Grauman was fellow freshman Ethan Ashbrook who also shot 1-under on Wednesday to tie for 30th. A total of 104 players competed at the Saint Mary's Invitational including 14 individuals.
The Gaels finished eighth and were one stroke ahead of WCC-rival San Francisco. No. 8 USC won the tournament with a superb 19-under final day score to blow past No. 14 BYU and take the tournament with a 21-under combined score. The Cougars finished second eight strokes behind USC while No. 18 Pepperdine grabbed third at 4-under. Arizona, who finished fourth, was the only other team to record an under-par score.
BYU's Peter Kuest grabbed the individual title with a 13-under performance in the three day to win by five strokes. Kuest, who is ranked No. 13 by Golfstat, broke the tournament record with an 10-under opening round and tied the 54-hole record low set by USC's Justin Suh last year. Wrapping up the top-5 were USC's Issei Tanabe (8-under), Oregon's Craig Ronne (6-under), Utah's Kyler Dunkle (5-under), and USC's Kyle Suppa (5-under).

FINAL ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
- Grauman had an eagle on the par 5 ninth hole to finish 3-under on the front nine.
- Four Gaels had four birdies during the final round.
- Individual Evan Peterson had three birdies on the front nine to finish 2-under including back-to-back birdies on eighth and ninth.
- Grauman shot 8-under on par 5's during the tournament, third best in the field.
- Saint Mary's will not play for the remainder of 2018 but return to the course on Jan. 29, 2019 for the Arizona Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Arizona. The tournament will take place at Sewailo Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz.
