SB | Gaels Walk-Off on Hornets at Lobo Classic

March 11, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In the middle day of the Lobo Classic, Saint Mary's (7-18) picked up a win over Sacramento State and was barely edged by New Mexico in two tight contests.

Game 1
Saint Mary's 3, Sacramento State 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
Late runs were key to the Gaels' second victory of the tournament as Saint Mary's scored all three runs in the final three frames.

After trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, SMC got on the board thanks to Dylan Linton's two-out infield single which scored Eryn McCoy. In the next inning, Kimiko Zapanta stole her 24th base of the season to move into scoring position after reaching safely and eventually came home on a Hailey Sparacino sacrifice fly to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Halle Sullivan's two-out double with Bailey Lotz on second helped the Gaels walk-off for their seventh victory of the year.

Katlyn Whitt pitched a strong game for SMC, throwing a complete game while only allowing six hits and two earned runs. Whitt is credited for four of the Gaels' seven wins this season.

Game 2
New Mexico 3, Saint Mary's 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
A late sixth-inning run from the Lobos on the strength of two doubles proved to be the difference maker in the back end of Saturday's doubleheader.

Saint Mary's scored both of their runs in the third inning while capitalizing on two Lobo errors. Linton started the rally with a one-out triple and Zapanta reached base right after on a bunt single. Linton put the Gaels up 1-0 after New Mexico's catcher muffed a throw trying to catch Zapanta stealing and SMC added the second run on a fielding error by the shortstop later in the frame.

The Gaels picked up seven hits in the game and all came from their 9-2 hitters. Saint Mary's speedy trio of Linton, Zapanta, and Nikki Alexander all had multi-hit games against UNM and Zapanta led the group with a 3-for-4 performance from the leadoff spot.

UP NEXT: FINAL DAY
Saint Mary's will look to end the tournament on a high note tomorrow as they take on Howard in their weekend finale. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m. and links for the game can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
