RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Freshman Kimiko Zapanta impressed with five hits on the first day of the UC Riverside Tournament but the Gaels ultimately dropped both contests to move to 4-14 on the young season.

Game 1
Stony Brook 7, Saint Mary's 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
After Stony Brook took a 4-0 advantage in the second, the Gaels responded with two runs of their own in the third. Two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Saint Mary's as Jaymee Campbell and Hannah Chew each drove in runs with two-out walks.

Stony Brook (3-3) added three more runs in the final three innings to take the game, 7-2.

Zapanta reached base four times in the Gaels' first contest with three singles and a base on balls. She also swiped two bases to bring her season total to 13.

Eileen Perez entered the contest in relief and allowed no earned runs in two innings. Five of the six outs recorded by the freshman came via strikeout.

Game 2
UC Riverside 4, Saint Mary's 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels collected six hits in their second game on Friday but couldn't manage more than their first inning run in an eventual 4-1 loss to the Highlanders.

Zapanta once again led the Gaels offense from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Bailey Lotz also had a multi-hit game for SMC with two singles of her own.

Perez started for the Gaels in Game 2 and threw her team-leading third complete game while surrendering only one earned run. She scattered eight hits and stuck out three batters in the tough luck loss.

UC Riverside (12-6) capitalized on two Gael errors to push across four runs, all occurring late in the contest. The Highlanders struck for three runs in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth to complete the come from behind win.

QUICK FACTS
Kimiko Zapanta is a perfect 14-for-14 this year in stolen base attempts. Saint Mary's has not had a player steal 20 bases in a season since Molly Bergeson did so in 2008.
Saint Mary's has three players batting above .280 this season: Zapanta (.298), Julia McCormack (.283), and Hailey Sparacino (.280).

UP NEXT: DAY 2
The Gaels will play just one game on Day 2 of the tournament against Brown at 9 a.m. Links for the game can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
