BSB | Gaels Shutout Santa Clara To Take Series

March 25, 2018

Final Stats

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- A combination of strong pitching and live bats Sunday carried the Saint Mary's baseball team to a West Coast Conference series victory at Santa Clara, taking the rubber game 7-0 over the Broncos at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ken Waldichuk (4-1) was masterful on the mound once again for the Gaels (12-8, 3-3 WCC). He threw 6 1/3 shutout innings with eight strikeouts. It was his fifth straight game with at least eight Ks and his third win in his last four starts. He recorded at least one strikeout in six of the seven innings he pitched in while never allowing a runner to reach third base.

  • Andrew Hansen then provided 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief to complete the Gaels' second shutout victory of the year. He had allowed four runs in his previous two appearances combined, but he shut down Santa Clara (14-7, 3-3 WCC) on Sunday, getting out of a one-out jam in the seventh with two runners on, then facing just four batters in both the eighth and ninth innings.

  • Edward Haus powered the Gaels' offense with three RBIs and a 3 for 5 day at the plate. His two-run double in the fifth turned a 1-0 game into a 3-0 advantage. He then made it 5-0 during the Gaels' three-run seventh with a one-out RBI single.

  • Gio Diaz was also big for the Gaels' offense, notching his first career multi-hit game in just his second career start. The true freshman went 3 for 4 with two doubles, his first career RBI and two runs scored. His RBI double to deep left-center field in the top of the eighth made it 7-0 and put the icing on the Gaels' victory.

  • Kevin Milam put the Gaels on the board first with a solo home run to straight-away centerfield in the top of the fourth. It was his first home run of the season, making it 1-0. The long ball cleared the 402-foot mark of the centerfield wall with plenty of room to spare.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 0: SMC did not allow a run, notching its second shutout of the year. The Gaels have had three games this season in which it did not allow an earned run (March 4 and 5 vs. Xavier, Sunday at Santa Clara).
  • 1, 2, 3: Diaz tallied his first career double, scored two runs and had three hits for his first career multi-hit game. He did all of that from the No. 9 spot in the batting order.
  • 11: Santa Clara stranded 11 runners on base. The Broncos had runners on in every inning but the first, and left multiple runners on in the third, fourth and ninth innings.
  • 12: Saint Mary's tallied 12 hits Sunday. It was the team's most hits since collecting 13 on March 9 at Washington State, and marked the first back-to-back double-digit hit performances (10 on Saturday) since March 8-9 at the Cougars.
COMING UP
  • The Gaels' stretch of five road games in five days continues at 2:30 p.m. on Monday with a non-conference tilt at UC Davis. The Gaels then head back to the South Bay for a non-conference matchup at San Jose State. Fans can find all live coverage links on SMCGaels.com.
