MSOC | Gaels Fly Past Cardinals in Season Opener

Saint Mary's scored six times to pick up a breezy win in their 2018 season opener on Friday.

Box Score MORAGA, Calif. — In their 2018 season opener, Saint Mary's men's soccer put on an offensive display to blow past Incarnate Word, 6-0, Friday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium.

SMC used a hot start, scoring four goals inside the first 34 minutes of the match, to set the tone of the season opener. SMC recorded assists on four out of the five goals, and finished the match with a total of 11 shots on frame.

The Gaels limited Incarnate Word to just two shots in the first half, and 10 for the full 90 minutes.

Senior goalkeeper Remi Prieur notched the win in the goal, making a total of four saves on the afternoon.

THE GOALS
  • Junior midfielder Jakub Svehlik notched the first goal for the Gaels after receiving a short give-and-go from Filippo Zattarin and firing his shot off the crossbar and in from 20 yards out.
  • At the 25:47 mark, forward Anders Engebretsen gave SMC the early 2-0 lead after his header found the back of the net from Joseph Restani's curling cross.
  • Less than four minutes later, SMC extended its lead, 3-0, as Restani tapped in the finish from a Jake Rudel cross.
  • Second year striker Lucas Andrews made it 4-0 before the half with the easy finish inside the box off an Engebretsen assist from the left side.
  • Andrews recorded his second goal of the match in the 54th minute after a turnover in the Cardinal zone allowed Andrews to fire a shot into the right side of the net for the finish.
  • Engebretsen capitalized on his second goal of the match off of a punted ball from Prieur that enabled Engebretsen to track down and beat his defender on in the 88th minute.

  • "It was a good win to start the season. We were able to play a lot of guys and get them some experience."
  • "It's important we bring the proper habits and mentality every day to get shutouts and wins and our guys did that today. I'm happy for them and our fans. Now we have to start preparing for Detroit Mercy."

  • The last time Saint Mary's scored at least six goals in a game was in 1988 against Loyola Marymount.
  • Six was the greatest margin of victory in any Div. I match in program history and largest since 1982 in a 8-1 win over DII College of Notre Dame.
