MSOC | Gaels Earn 1-1 Road Draw with No. 19 Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO. - Saint Mary's earned their first point of the 2025 season with a gritty 1-1 draw against 19th ranked Kansas City. Sophomore forward David Lee scored his first goal as a Gael to put Saint Mary's up 1-0 but Kansas City would equalize in the second half to split the points at home.

The 1-1 draw would be the first positive result against a ranked opponent since the Gaels took down No. 23 LMU during the 2023 season with a shutout victory. Sam Bentley finished with four saves in the match while each team recorded a red card, Saint Mary's in the 63rd minute to Luke Hoelting and Kansas City in the 85th minute to Guille Munoz.

FIRST HALF SMC 1-0 KC

It was a defensive war for Saint Mary's all night long. The Gaels defense faced 22 shots and 15 corner kicks in the match but were able to get on the scoreboard in the 38th minute thanks to sophomore forward David Lee

Redshirt freshman defender TJ Dilley took a free kick near midfield for the Gaels and sent a long ball to the top of the box. There, Kayvon Monfared flicked the ball on with a header and Lee got on the end of it with a left footed strike to put Saint Mary's up 1-0.

FINAL SMC 1-1 KC

Despite going into the half down a goal, Kansas City would take just three minutes into the second half to equalize. Former Gael Wade Muttitt scored for the Roos for his second of the season.

Saint Mary's faced 13 shots in the second half and 22 total on the night. Bentley finished the match with just four saves as the Roos only put five shots on target. One of his big saves came in the 75th minute off a shot attempt near the six-yard box to help seal the 1-1 draw.

TJ Dilley and Bastian Toelhoej played all 90 minutes as a part of the Gaels defense while Cesar Batres and Jona Starek played 90 minutes in the team's midfield.
