WSOC | Gaels Win TD Bank Classic with 2-1 OT Win

Saint Mary's won the TD Bank Classic tournament hosted by Vermont on Sunday with their second overtime victory of the weekend.

BURLINGTON, Vt. — In the finals of the TD Bank Classic, Saint Mary's fought through another tough, overtime match and came out on top over Maine with a 2-1 win to even their record at 2-2. The Black Bears moved to 0-2-1 with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After 90 minutes, both teams were locked up at 1-1 and the match went into overtime. With time winding down in the first overtime session, Jaylen Crim caused a turnover in the Maine half and then beat the keeper on a one-on-one with a poke shot to the right side to seal the victory for the Gaels. The goal was Crim's second of the season, tying her total from last year.

Trailing 1-0 into the halftime break, the Gaels stormed back early into the final half as Crim set up Jordyn Cunningham with a well-placed cross into the box that allowed Cunningham to header the ball into the back of the net and tie the score. Cunningham's second in as many games was just as critical as her first, which gave SMC the overtime victory versus Vermont on Friday.

Maleah Milner made her fourth start of the year in goal for Saint Mary's and recorded four saves to help clinch the win. On the other side of the field, the Gaels fired off 10 shots with five landing on goal.

Following the game, All-Tournament Team awards were presented and Saint Mary's had four players selected to the team. Crim was named Tournament MVP after recording two assists and the tournament-winning goal in her two matches. Milner, Cunningham, and Maya Alcantara were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Over the weekend, Milner recorded two wins and 11 saves in goal, Cunningham scored two goals including the game-winner against Vermont, and Alcantara scored a goal and took four shots.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
  • "It was great to get these results and to get them in overtime was fantastic for our team. In the past few years, we have struggled in extra time, so for our younger players to experience overtimes and see what it takes in win in those minutes is great for our development."

QUICK FACTS
  • Saint Mary's was called for only five fouls during the match.
  • Milner notched all four of her saves in the second half.
  • Crim led the team with three shots, two of which landed on goal.
  • Crim leads the Gaels in points with two goals and two assists this season.
