WSOC | Roadrunners Topple Gaels in Double OT

Saint Mary's dropped their first match of the weekend on Friday in Bakersfield to the score of 1-0.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — For the fifth time this season, Saint Mary's (4-4) fought into overtime on Friday night against the Roadrunners but eventually fell 1-0 in the second overtime frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After 105 minutes of scoreless action, CSU Bakersfield notched the game-winning goal as Aminah Settles found Sabrina Delgado on a cross to seal the win for the Roadrunners (2-5). Friday's game marked the third straight game the Gaels and Runners have needed extra time and the second match in as many years that Bakersfield has prevailed in overtime.

Maleah Milner made a valiant effort to keep Saint Mary's in the match by making 11 saves in goal. The Gaels' keeper blocked four shots in the first overtime period alone and faced 20 shots and 14 corners from the Roadrunners' offense.

SMC took 12 shots in the match and were led by Anyssa Dominguez and Maya Alcantara who managed four each. All four of the senior Dominguez's attempts came on goal. Saint Mary's outshot the Runners 7-3 in the opening 45 minutes before Bakersfield rattled off 11 in the final half compared to four for the Gaels.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE

  • "We played a good first half but were outworked in the second half and overtime. We had to defend too much late in the game. It's something we will talk about and need to fix moving forward."

QUICK FACTS

  • Milner tied her career-high with 11 saves (Oct. 29, 2017 vs. No. 12 Pepperdine).
  • Six of the Gaels' 12 shots came on goal.
  • Dominguez now leads the team in shots this season with 14.
  • Six Gaels played the entirety of the match.
  • Kaitlin Groleau led SMC with 37 minutes off the bench.

UP NEXT: SACRAMENTO STATE

  • Saint Mary's will travel to the state's capital this Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Hornets. Further information and links to a live stream can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
