SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Saint Mary's and Sacramento went down to the wire on Sunday afternoon as extra time was needed to decide the match, but both teams eventually settled for a 1-1 tie. Sunday's match was the first contest this season for the Gaels that has resulted in a draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's (4-4-1) struck first in the game as sophomore
Kelsey Hill recorded her first goal of the season in the 65th minute. Hill stole the ball from a Hornets' defender and finished with a long range shot from 25 yards out to give the Gaels the 1-0 advantage. Hill led Saint Mary's with three shots in the match.
SMC's lead wouldn't last for long however as the Hornets' Sarah Sherwood lofted a high shot from distance into the Gaels' goal less than five minutes later to equalize. Sherwood's tally was one of 11 shots for Sac State on the afternoon.
Maleah Milner once again had a strong game in net for the Gaels, blocking five shots in her ninth start of the season. The sophomore entered this week's action third in the WCC in saves and now has 47 this year.
The two teams combined for only 19 shots in the largely-defensive contest. In the first half, each team fired off just two shots each and totaled two corners.
Saint Mary's will have a chance for their fifth non-conference win of the season in next week's match against UC Davis. The Gaels have not accomplished the feat since 2015 when they also won five non-conference matches.
THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
- "I thought we did enough to win today. We had very good chances including a clear breakaway and several point-blank shots."
- "It's crazy that we have played in six overtime games this year. We just need to figure out how to put teams away when we have a chance. Sac State played tough today and it was a hard fought match."
QUICK FACTS
- SMC is now 9-3-1 all-time versus the Hornets.
- The Gaels took eight shots compared to 11 for Sac State.
- Saint Mary's defense allowed only two corner kicks during the match.
UP NEXT: UC DAVIS
- Saint Mary's will play their last non-conference match of the season on Saturday when they host UC Davis for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. More information and links for the game can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
