WSOC | Quick Start Propels Gaels To Victory

Saint Mary's got off to a quick start on Saturday and scored the only two goals of the match in the first ten minutes to secure the win against UC Davis

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's played an strong match on Saturday against UC Davis, scoring the only two goals of the match within the first 10 minutes of play. Jordyn Cunningham and Anyssa Dominguez both connected for goals and gave Saint Mary's the 2-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cunningham began the match in exciting fashion as she scored in just the fifth minute off assists from Jaylen Crim and Dominguez. Cunningham rocketed a shot to the back right corner of the goal to get the match off to a quick 1-0 start.

The Gaels kept the momentum rolling as Dominguez scored another goal minutes later off assists from Hailey Prentice and Jaylen Crim. Crim fed the ball to Prentice who then passed it to Dominguez waiting in the middle of the box and sent a high shot into the top left corner of the net in the eighth minute of the match.

Just before the first half ended, UC Davis defender Kristie Braken-Guelke sent a 40-yard shot off a free kick into the goal that was then called back due to a foul in the box. The scramble in the box resulted in Gael goalie Maleah Milner exiting the match with an injury. Goalie Sarah Sawatzky came in and played the remainder of the match for Saint Mary's and recorded three saves.

The second half was largely defensive as the Gaels worked to retain their 2-0 lead. Cunningham was close to scoring her second goal of the match in the 75th minute on an assist from Dominguez, but shot just wide to the left of the goal.
