WSOC | Gaels Handle Waves' Late Surge in 1-0 Win

Saint Mary's withstood a 10-shot second half from Pepperdine on Sunday to pick up their first conference victory of the year.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's outlasted Pepperdine 1-0 Sunday afternoon as Jasmine Edwards scored the game-winning goal to help improve the Gaels to a 6-4-2 record and a 1-0-1 West Coast Conference record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels' defense helped lead the team to their third shutout in a row this season. The Waves outshot the Gaels 17-5 in the match and 10-0 in the second half but Saint Mary's weathered the storm to pick up the win.

Senior Jasmine Edwards scored her first goal of the season off a penalty kick when Jaylen Crim drew a foul sprinting down the left side of the box in the 21st minute. The PK was the first of the season for the Gaels and ended up being the difference maker in the match as the lone goal of the game.

Maleah Milner earned her second shutout of the weekend and fourth of the year with a three save performance in the match. The sophomore recorded her best save of the game when the Waves' Joelle Anderson rocketed a free kick towards the net but Milner tipped it over the crossbar to prevent a goal in the 37th minute.

The match was one of Saint Mary's most physical games of the season as both teams combined for 32 fouls. The Gaels averaged less than 11 fouls heading into the contest.
