MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Director of Athletics and Recreation Mike Matoso has announced the signing of head men's golf coach Scott Hardy to a five-year contract extension, following numerous years of success leading the program.
This past season, Hardy led the program to its fourth straight NCAA Regional appearance, extending the record for most consecutive NCAA appearances in program history. With 10 top-10 finishes over the course of the season, and a second-place finish at the WCC Championships, the Gaels earned a No. 9-seed in the Kissimmee, Fla. Regional. Led by seniors Perry Cohen, Pavan Sagoo and Connor Blick, the 2017-18 squad recorded the program's second best 4-player stroke average (287.68).
"Scott has put a tremendous amount of hard work and energy into the golf program, and his efforts have shown through the success he has had," Matoso said. "We are excited to work with Scott and continue to support the program. He is a huge part of Gael Athletics and he is a perfect fit in the Gael family."
Entering his 19th year as head coach, Hardy has been named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year eight times and has led the Gaels to the NCAA Regionals eight times and the NCAA Championships twice.
"I really appreciate the commitment Saint Mary's College is making in me with this contract, most notably our Director of Athletics Mike Matoso and President Jim Donahue," Hardy said. "The opportunity to continue to develop our golf program and student-athletes into national competitors is terrific for me. The golf program has enjoyed many accomplishments in my time at Saint Mary's, but what keeps me motivated and driven is the fact that the best is still ahead for our program."
Hardy, who was named SMC's golf coach in the fall of 2000, has guided 13 players to 27 first-team All-WCC honors, one GCAA All-American, eight GCAA All-America Scholar-Athletes, three WCC Players of the Year, and one WCC Freshman of the Year. He has also coached eight individuals to 15 tournament titles in his 18 years.
"We are going to continue to chase our goals of winning championships and producing outstanding student-athletes on the course and in the classroom. With the help of our dedicated athletic administration we will continue to make Saint Mary's a destination for collegiate golfers," Hardy said.
Under Hardy, the Gaels have had 12 players win medalist honors at collegiate tournaments, while the team has won 22 tournaments, the most by any coach in the history of the college.
