GOLF | Gaels Finish Third at Arizona Intercollegiate

Saint Mary's had another strong round on Tuesday for their first top-3 finish of the year.
TUCSON, Ariz. — Another solid round on Tuesday propelled Saint Mary's to a top-3 finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate as the Gaels wrapped up the three-round tournament with a combined 21-under score. 
THE LEADERBOARD
Ethan Farnam had his second consecutive 4-under round to finish in sole possession of fourth place with a 10-under total and round scores of 69-67-67. It was the sophomore's first top-5 finish of his collegiate career and also the best result of any Gael this season. Four birdies on the front-9 helped Farnam lock down a solid round and he ended only one stroke back of Trevor Werbylo (UA) and Riley Elmes (LMU) for second place.
As a team, Saint Mary's shot 21-under during the two-day tournament and placed third out of 16 teams. The Gaels trailed only Arizona (37-under) and No. 11 Arizona State (34-under) on the team leaderboard and finished ahead of their WCC rivals No. 9 BYU and Loyola Marymount, who placed ninth and 11th, respectively.
The Gaels also finished ahead of two more ranked teams: No. 18 Texas A&M (t-4th) and No. 41 UCLA (t-6th).
Michael Slesinski had the second best performance for SMC at 2-under for the tournament while Blake Hathcoat finished just one stroke behind. Ryan Grauman and Ethan Ashbrook rounded out the Gaels' scoreboard at 1-over each.
Chandler Phillips from Texas A&M claimed the individual title at 19-under and had one of the best Tuesday rounds at 7-under.

FINAL ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
- Three Gaels birdied the 364 yard par 4 1st hole on Tuesday.
 - Farnam led all Saint Mary's players with five birdies.
 - SMC shot 12-under during the tournament on par 4's, the third best of any team.
 - Third place was the highest finish yet this season for Saint Mary's.
 
- "It's nice to get the spring season off to a solid start. The guys put in a lot of work over the winter and their preparation went a long way toward the good play this week. We will get back to work and hope to be as prepared for Hawai'i in a couple weeks."
