Saint Mary's is in fourth place in the 20-team tournament after shooting 4-under in the opening round.
LIHUE, Hawaii — No. 48 Saint Mary's had a stellar start to open the 43rd annual John Burns Intercollegiate, claiming fourth place after 18 holes and are just four strokes back of the leader, BYU.
THE LEADERBOARD
Saint Mary's was led by Michael Slesinski in the opening round as the redshirt sophomore shot 3-under to tie for sixth in the field of 114. Slesinski dominated the front-9 on Thursday with an eagle on the first hole and four straight birdies on six through nine.
Blake Hathcoat also scored a top-10 finish on the day by finishing tied for ninth at 2-under. Hathcoat finished his round in the same manner he began it: with a birdie. The junior totaled five birdies in the opening round.
Saint Mary's trails only No. 24 BYU, No. 20 Texas A&M, and No. 11 Arizona State heading into the middle round. The Gaels were one of only six squads in the 20-team field to finish below par on the day.
Ethan Ashbrook finished his opening round at 1-under while Ryan Grauman finished his day with nine straight pars to finish 2-over. Ethan Farnam rounded out the Gaels' scores at 5-over.
BYU leads the pack largely thanks to Peter Kuest, who has a share of the individuals lead at 6-under. Kuest recently took the individual title at the Saint Mary's Invitational during the fall season. Wrapping up the top-5 are Washington State's Daniel Kolar (6-under), Texas A&M's Walker Lee (5-under), New Mexico's Galvin Green (4-under), and LBSU's Joe Fryer (4-under).
