WTEN | Gaels Come Up Big on Day 1 of ITA Regionals

Saint Mary's had a stellar opening day at the tournament in Stanford.

STANFORD, Calif. — Saint Mary's had a great opening day at the ITA Regionals in Stanford as they won 11 of their 14 matches. The Gaels will have three singles players and two doubles teams in the round of 32 tomorrow.

Freshman Gabriela Tevez had a strong showing on Friday with two singles victories. Tevez defeated Seattle's Alvarez-Sanabria easily 6-1, 6-2 and picked up another win as her next opponent retired while Tevez was up, 6-3, 2-0.

Jordan Harris and No. 68 Mariia Kozyreva will also appear in the round of 32 tomorrow after two-win days. Harris posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the round of 128 and then battled through three sets against Washington's Delara Zamani for a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win. Kozyreva made quick work of her two competitors as well with 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 wins.

Danielle McIntyre, Chloe Goyette and Liesl Pieters also earned singles victories in the first round of play before falling in the round of 64.

In doubles, Saint Mary's won two of their three matches by wide margins. Goyette and Harris defeated Santa Clara's tandem of Lynch/Pesquiera 8-2 while No. 48 Kozyreva/McIntyre cruised to an 8-1 win over Jittakoat/Ly-Nguyen from Washington State. Tevez and Pieters were narrowly edged 8-6 by San Jose State's Sendar/Youseva.
