MSOC | No. 11 Gaels Remain Undefeated in WCC Play, Beat Pacific 1-0

MORAGA, Calif. – The No. 11 Gaels only needed one goal on Thursday to take their fourth-straight conference win and remain undefeated in the WCC as they beat Pacific 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first 13 minutes of the match on Wednesday passed in a largely defensive manner as no shots and only one corner kick were taken. However, in the 14th minute there was a foul committed in the box that set the stage for an SMC penalty kick. Senior Anders Engebretsen lined up for his sixth PK of the season and sent it into the back left side of the net past the Tigers' goalie who dove left. Engebretsen is now a perfect, 6-for-6 in penalty kick attempts this season.

Engebretsen had another close scoring opportunity in the 27th minute after he sent a powerful shot towards the goal, but it bounced off the right goal post and went back into the field of play. The Tigers had their first shot on goal in the 38th minute of the match after a breakaway from a Pacific forward, but the shot went high over the goal. At the end of the half, Saint Mary's had outshot Pacific six to one and the Tigers were forced to make two saves while the Gaels had none.

In the 63rd minute, senior Jake Rudel took his closest shot of the day after he worked his way past two Tiger defenders to take the open shot, but the ball rolled just wide of the net and went out of bounds. Pacific took a shot of their own shortly after in the 64th minute, but senior Remi Prieur was able to stop the ball and keep the Tigers scoreless. Freshman Younes Dayehk in the 79th minute of the match sent a rocket towards the goal from the top of the box, but it was too far to the left and sailed out of bounds for the Gaels' 12th shot of the day.

By the end of the match, the Gaels had accumulated 15 shots and five shots on goal. Saint Mary's defense was able to hold the Tigers to just three shots, their new season-low for an opponent, and only one shot on goal. Pacific was forced to make four saves on the day while Remi Prieur only had to make one save in the entire match.
