MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's will return to McKeon Pavilion for their next two contests against the UC Davis Aggies and the NC State Wolfpack next week.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels picked up a win and a loss last week as they defeated UC Santa Barbara in their home-opener before narrowly falling to Wyoming on the road. Saint Mary's beat the Gauchos with a margin of 21-points while four separate players recorded double-digits points on the night; Madeline Holland 16 pts, Sam Simons 11 pts, Taycee Wedin 11 pts, Emily Codding 10 pts. SMC also continued the trend of outrebounding their opponent as the Gaels recorded 55 rebounds compared to UCSB's 38. Saint Mary's also outrebounded the Cowgirls 49 to 41 in last Sunday's game. Saint Mary's has recorded a total of 146 rebounds in just three games whereas their opponents have only collected 105.Â
LEADING THE GAELS
Junior Madeline Holland is leading Saint Mary's through the first three contests as she is averaging 14.3 points per game while shooting 55.2 percent from the field. Holland has also contributed to SMC's board-dominance this year as she records an average of 5.7 rebounds per game. She leads the team with a total of 12 assists. Last season, Holland ended the year averaging 8.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game with a shooting percentage of 48.6. Junior Emily Codding is close behind Holland as she is averaging 14.0 points per game, while leading the squad with 9.3 rebounds per contest.
UC DAVIS
The Aggies are 0-2 through their first games of the season after falling to Montana State in their season-opener followed by a loss to Fresno State. UC Davis will face off against Santa Clara on Saturday for their first home matchup of the year prior to their contest versus the Gaels on Tuesday. The Aggies have been outscored 150-130 in their first two games as they lost to Montana State by a margin of 12 before losing to Fresno State 73-65. UC Davis finished No. 1 in the Big West conference during the 2018-19 regular season before also winning first place in the Big West tournament after a 58-50 win over No. 2 Hawaii.
Leading the Aggies this season is redshirt sophomore Kayla Konrad and redshirt senior Katie Toole who are both averaging 13.0 points per game. Konrad also leads the team with an average of seven rebounds per game and a shooting percentage of 52.9 through their first two games. Senior Nina Bessolo is shooting 7-for-19 (.368) for the Aggies which is currently the best on the team. UC Davis as a team is averaging 35.5 rebounds per matchup compared to their opponents who are averaging 40.0.Â
NC STATE
NC State is undefeated through their first three contests this season after North Carolina A&T in their season-opener followed by victories against UN Wilmington and Lamar. The Wolfpack have played all three of their matchups this season at home and they have a game scheduled against Maine before they hit the road for their first away contest of the year against Saint Mary's. NC State has scored at least 80 points in each of their games this season and they are now outscoring their opponents by a margin of 241-124.
Sophomore Elissa Cunane is leading the Wolfpack this season with an average of 13.7 points per game followed closely by junior Kayla Jones who is averaging 13.3. Cunane is also shooting 69.6 percent (16-for-23) from the field thus far which is another team-leading statistic. Freshman Jada Boyd and Cunane are tied for highest rebounding average on the team (8.3 rpg) as they both have a total of 25 on the season. NC State as a team is averaging 49 rebounds per contest compared to their opponents who are averaging just 38.7.
