VB | Zags Comeback Against Gaels on Senior Day

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's won the first two sets on Senior Day inside McKeon Pavilion but couldn't close out the victory as Gonzaga rallied to take the match in five sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Gaels jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead and never looked back as they closed out the Zags, 25-21 in the opening set. Saint Mary's picked up 13 kills in the set and boasted a .355 hitting percentage. Gonzaga made a late push to make things interesting at 23-21 but a kill from Sienna Young and an ensuing ace by Breyan Ashley would secure the set.
SET 2 | The second set of the match was all Gaels as SMC cruised to a 25-10 win. A 10-3 run midway through the set would help Saint Mary's separate and then the Gaels closed on a 9-2 run to go up 2-0 in the match. SMC hit over .600 in the set while Gonzaga's hitting percentage was in the negatives.
SET 3 | The middle set went back and forth with never team getting ahead by more than a few points but Gonzaga was able to rally late to take their first set of the match. Down 18-21, GU strung together a couple kills to claim seven of the last nine points and win 25-23.
SET 4 | An 8-0 run put the Bulldogs ahead 11-5 but Saint Mary's managed to fight back to close the lead to just a point. After being tied up 15-all, GU won the next seven points and eventually forced the fifth set with a 25-16 win.
SET 5 | A rough start had the Gaels down 5-0 off the bat and the team wouldn't be able to recover as Gonzaga maintained a four to five point lead for most of the set. The Zags took the set and the match at 15-9.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
7: Aubrey Pitts had a game-high seven blocks.
17: Elena Baka led the team with 17 kills.
10: A total of 10 service errors hurt the Gaels in the match.
14: SMC recorded 14 blocks in the contest, six more than the Zags.
