Saint Mary's fell in their spring season home opener to the Lopes on Sunday.
MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (0-4) dropped Sunday's match against a tough Grand Canyon (6-1) team in the Gaels' first home contest of the season with a final score of 6-1.
Picking up the lone point for Saint Mary's was freshman David Abfalter who won in straight sets in the No. 6 singles spot, 7-5, 7-5. His opponent, Jakub Novak, had won three straight matches prior to running into Abfalter.
Both Abhishek Bastola and James Watt forced three sets in their respective matches but were edged in the final set. Matis Bot played in a marathon second set in his singles match but narrowly dropped the tiebreaker. Damon Kesaris and Daniel Krutik also took the court for Saint Mary's in solo play.
Bot and Bastola were leading in their doubles match against the tandem of Lang/Novak, 5-4, but their game was called before it could finish as the Lopes claimed the doubles point.
