MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Beach Volleyball is set to begin their 2019 campaign after ranking as high as No. 19 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) a year ago.
Â
The Gaels will see the return of five of their six All-WCC Team members from last season including two (
Sarah Chase and
Lindsey Knudsen who earned First Team Honors). A year ago, SMC finished 17-11 overall and they were runners-up in the West Coast Conference Championship to Pepperdine who has now won the tournament in three-consecutive seasons.
Â
On Wednesday, the WCC announced that Saint Mary's was picked to finish second in the conference below Pepperdine and they were the only other school in the conference to receive a first-place vote. In addition to the poll, three Gaels were placed on the All-WCC Preseason team: Chase, L. Knudsen, and
Emily Bible. Last season, Bible finished with a 16-12 record, was 5-1 while competing in the No. 1 position and 11-11 at No. 2. Meanwhile, Chase was 13-15 overall and played all of her matches on the third court. Finally, Knudsen finished the 2018 season also with a 16-12 mark, posting the same numbers as Bible (5-1 at No. 1 and 11-11 at No. 2). All three were on the All-WCC team last year including two receiving First Team honors (Chase and Knudsen).
Â
The beginning of the 2019 season will see no shortage of stiff competition as Saint Mary's is set to compete in the Rigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic in Honolulu. There, they will take on the likes of No. 1 UCLA, No. 4 Pepperdine, No. 5 Hawaii, and No. 11 Stanford. SMC will play two games on Saturday (Hawaii and UCLA) and two on Sunday (Pepperdine and Stanford).
