MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's heads to the postseason for the 10th-consecutive season as they were selected to host Hawaii in the opening round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Friday, March 22.
Saint Mary's has a 20-11 record thus far this season and have successfully achieved their eighth-consecutive 20-plus win season. A week ago, the Gaels faced No. 14 Gonzaga in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Tournament and took the Bulldogs to double overtime. However, SMC fell by one point after the Zags scored a buzzer-beating layup as time expired.
Saint Mary's had yet another run in the West Coast Conference regular season, finishing fourth with a 12-6 record. In the middle of the season, they went on a 5-game winning streak and stretched their run to nine wins in 10 contests. One of their biggest wins of the season came on February 7 when the Gaels defeated BYU in Provo. It was the Cougars' only WCC loss at home this season and BYU ultimately went on to win the WCC Tournament, earning an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Historically, SMC's farthest run into the WNIT was in 2015 when they made it to the quarterfinals against UCLA. The Gaels' last hosted in 2016 when they faced Eastern Michigan in Moraga.
