WBB | Elite Defense and Balanced Scoring Leads to Gritty Road Win for Saint Mary’s
2/7/2026 8:36:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team went into the city Saturday afternoon and pulled off a complete team win to defeat San Francisco 72-55.
Abigail Shoff continued her double-digit streak and finished with 10 points while Edie Clarke had a well-rounded performance with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for Saint Mary's (14-11, 5-7 West Coast Conference).
The Gaels flexed their depth and bench scoring ability, outscoring USF 37-3 in bench points. Malia Latu led Saint Mary's with 12 points on 50% shooting off the bench while Addi Wedin and Amy Kurkowski had eight points apiece against San Francisco (14-10, 7-6 WCC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's put together two solid quarters offensively to lead USF 35-30 at the break. They did the bulk of their damage in the paint, shooting a combined 52% from the field. A 10-0 scoring run gave Saint Mary's a 13-point lead under the three-minute mark in the second quarter. A 7-2 run including a much needed three-pointer for the Dons cut the lead to five at the break.
USF cut the deficit all the way to one late in the third quarter but Addi Wedin converted a layup with 15 seconds remaining to give Saint Mary's a three-point lead heading into the fourth. The Dons only shot 26% from the field in the period but got to the free throw line to get back into the game before the final ten minutes.
Saint Mary's needed a good quarter on both ends of the floor to pull off the road win and they did exactly that, holding San Francisco to seven points on three made field goals while hitting four threes and finishing with 21 points in the quarter. Head coach Jeff Cammon and his squad forced seven turnovers to hold the Dons to just seven points on 37% shooting. USF failed to hit a three over the final ten minutes as the Gaels grew their lead to 17 points for their fifth conference win of the season.
GAME NOTES
Saint Mary's improved to 14-11 overall and 5-7 in conference play after their 72-55 road win over San Francisco. They'll return to Moraga next Thursday to host the Pacific Tigers for their last matchup of the regular season. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 PM and tickets can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets.
