GAELS OUTLOOK
Statement Road Win over San Francisco…
The Saint Mary's women's basketball team went into The City Saturday afternoon and pulled off a complete team win to defeat San Francisco 72-55. Abigail Shoff continued her double-digit streak and finished with 10 points while Edie Clarke had a well-rounded performance with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for Saint Mary's (14-11, 5-7 West Coast Conference).
The Gaels flexed their depth and bench scoring ability, outscoring USF 37-3 in bench points. Malia Latu led Saint Mary's with 12 points on 50% shooting off the bench while Addi Wedin and Amy Kurkowski had eight points apiece against San Francisco (14-10, 7-6 WCC). The win ended a two-game skid and also stood as the Gaels' first road win over USF since January of 2023. 72 points also went down as their highest season total against a Division I opponent this season as they shot 48% from the field and 40% from three-point range.
Three Gaels in Double-Figures; Shoff Leads Team in Scoring Through Two-Game Week…
Abigail Shoff and Edie Clarke finished with double-figures in their 17-point victory over San Francisco on Saturday but senior guard Malia Latu led the team with 12 points off the bench. Latu took revenge on her old team Saturday as she played her first collegiate season with the Dons back in 2022-23 before transferring to Santa Clara for the next two seasons. Latu shot 50% from the field off the bench and also added three rebounds and three steals.
Clarke got back into double-figures for the first time since January 24th against Seattle U where she scored ten points in a 67-53 victory over the Redhawks. Shoff meanwhile continues to be the team's most consistent scorer as of late, reaching double-figures for the fourth consecutive game and seventh time out of her last eight games dating back to January 8th. She shot 40% from the field and also grabbed a team high seven rebounds.
Week Full of Season Highs for Charlece Ohiaeri…
Junior transfer Charlece Ohiaeri made consecutive starts for the first time as a Gael and did not disappoint, combining for 19 points over her two games against LMU and San Francisco. Ohiaeri went for a season high 11 points in Thursday's loss to the Lions and added another eight points in her start against the Dons, shooting 50% from the field and recording a career high six rebounds.
Ohiaeri has started alongside 6-foot-4 forward Edie Clarke the past two games in a dynamic and long lineup for the Gaels, yielding positive stretches on both sides of the floor. The Las Vegas native will be in line for her fifth start this Thursday against Pacific.
WCC Ranks in Defense, Steals and Opp. Turnovers Per Game…
Head coach Jeff Cammon has been putting up eye-catching numbers on the defensive end since the start of his tenure in 2023 with several of those numbers reaching program records this season. The Gaels lead the WCC in scoring defense allowing just 58.5 points per game, rank third in opponent three-point percentage at 29.6%, second in opponent turnovers per game at 18.4 and second in steals with over ten a game. Their scoring defense and steals per game mark would stand as program records if the season were to end today.
Edie Clarke and Jada Hunter are big pieces to the Gaels defensive success as both rank inside the top-five individually in steals while Clarke ranks eighth in the WCC averaging a block per game. Hunter's steal numbers have jumped through the roof this season, averaging 2.2 per game and leading Saint Mary's with a career high 54 so far this season. The Gaels just recorded a season high 17 steals in a 75-69 defeat to LMU but are 10-4 this season when recording 10+ steals.
Series History…
Saint Mary's and Pacific have traded blows over the last several seasons as the two programs are knotted at 3-3 over their last six matchups. The Gaels had the last laugh most recently in their first meeting this season, erasing a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to win 60-55 in Stockton back on January 8th. The last home loss to the Tigers came in Cammon's first season as a Gael, suffering a three-point defeat in 2024.
As for the Redhawks, it's been all Saint Mary's as they hold a perfect 6-0 record all-time dating back to 2008. The two teams met earlier this season in Seattle as Saint Mary's came from behind in the second half, outscoring Seattle U 50-31 over the final 20 minutes to win 67-53. They hit seven three-pointers in the game and had four players in double-figures for the first time this season. Four of the six wins historically for the Gaels have been in double-digits with the closest margin of victory coming in a 71-70 road win back in 2011.
ABOUT THE TIGERS (9-14, 4-8 WCC)
Pacific enters the week with a 9-14 record overall and sits just a game back of the Gaels with a 4-8 conference record. After starting conference play 2-0, the Tigers dropped five consecutive games, including their 60-55 defeat to Saint Mary's back on January 8th. They ended their five-game skid with a 12-point home win over Washington State but went on to drop three of their next four games.
Pacific averages 65 points per game but ranks tenth in the WCC, allowing nearly 70 points per game. They are one of the better perimeter teams in the conference, ranking fifth in three-point percentage at 32% while also second in opponent three-point percentage at 29.3%. Winner Batholomew continues to lead the Tigers in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game while also ripping down over five boards a game. Sydney Ward is the other double-digit scorer for Pacific, averaging 10.9 points per game and a team high 6.8 rebounds, good for sixth in the WCC.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS (5-19, 1-12 WCC)
Seattle U has had a rough start to its inaugural WCC season, holding a 5-19 overall record and just a 1-12 conference record as the Redhawks sit in last place in the WCC standings. After losing their first four conference games, they recorded their first WCC victory over San Diego 68-62. Since then, they have dropped eight straight.
Ella Brubaker has been the team's best player through 24 games this season, averaging 15,7 points and nearly five rebounds per game. Brubaker is the Redhawks leading scorer, three-point shooter, free throw shooter and steals getter. Tamia Stricklin is the other double-digit scorer for Seattle, averaging 10.6 points and a team high 5.6 rebounds per game. The Redhawks will be well rested on Saturday as they travel to Moraga for their lone game of the week.
