BASE | Gaels Get Going Early and Don’t Stop, Beat Hornets 10-1

MORAGA, Calif. –– The Gaels put up runs early and didn't let up on Tuesday in the mid-week 10-1 victory over Sacramento State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Gaels got the first runs on the board on Tuesday afternoon as Andrew Shebloski singled down the third base line followed by a double from Joe Vranesh that scored Shebloski and gave SMC the early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, Kevin Milam struck out the side and had four strikeouts total by the end of the inning.

  • In the bottom of the third inning, Gio Diaz laid down a successful bunt to start the inning before stealing second base. Ryan Novis then singled up the middle which scored Diaz from second base. Shebloski then dropped a single into short center field and scored Novis. Joe Vranesh then hit a homerun over the left field wall that cleared the bases. The third inning ended with Saint Mary's on top of Sacramento State 5-0.

  • Milam cruised through his first five innings of work and didn't give up a walk until the sixth inning. With one out and runners on the corner after a single, a caught-foul ball to right field scored the runner on third and gave the Hornets their first run of the day. Milam went on to strikeout the following batter and got the Gaels out of the inning.

  • Austin Chauvin lead off the sixth inning with a single followed by a walk of JC Santini. Diaz then hit a double to deep left field that bounced off the wall and scored Chauvin to give the Gaels the 6-1 advantage. Novis then lined a two-RBI single to left center field and scored both Santini and Diaz to put the Gaels up 8-1.

  • Marc Goulart lead off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double to deep right center field before a wild pitch advanced him to third. Diaz collected his fourth hit of the day with a single that scored Goulart and put the Gaels up 9-1. Gabe Giosso was walked in the following at-bat and Matt Green responded with a single to center field that gave the Gaels their tenth run of the day.
QUOTABLES

"I'm proud of them because they played like a team today," said head coach Eric Valenzuela. "Milam pitched like himself and did a good job of getting ahead in the count and then locating with his off-speed pitches. I'm proud of him for getting the big time strikeout with bases loaded."
