LAS VEGAS – Through the use of impenetrable defense, Saint Mary's ran through Loyola Marymount in the West Coast Conference Quarterfinals, sealing a date with No. 1 seed and No. 14-ranked Gonzaga in the semis.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- QUARTER 1 | Senior Megan McKay got the scoring going for SMC with a layup under the basket fed from sophomore Madeline Holland. The Gaels continued to roll, scoring seven unanswered points to open the contest. The Lions got their first points with 7:15 on the clock, hitting a free throw after a shooting foul. At the media timeout, the Gaels led 9-4 with 4:53 to play in the first. After a pair of free throws from senior Sydney Raggio and another McKay layup, SMC held a 9-point, 13-4 advantage. The Gaels' defense continued to dominate for the remainder of the quarter as they held the Lions to just one made field goal in the opening 10 minutes. SMC led 14-4 at the end of the first.
- QUARTER 2 | LMU scored the first three points of the period, but McKay responded with a pair of free throws and a 6-foot jumper from Sam Simons made it 18-7 Saint Mary's with 5:17 on the clock. Moments later, Raggio's two free throws made it a 6-0 run for the Gaels which pushed their lead to 13 (20-7). SMC stretched their streak to eight points and eventually outscored the Lions 10-1 over the course of three and a half minutes. The Gaels' defense continued to dominate as they closed out the first half, holding LMU to just 16.7 percent shooting (4-for-24). SMC headed to the half with a 17-point lead as a result (31-14). Furthermore, SMC outrebounded the Lions 33-15 in the first opening 20 minutes.
- QUARTER 3 | The Gaels opened up the second half with eight straight points in the first 1:15 of the half. The run including a pair of 3-pointers from sophomores Emily Codding and Madeline Holland and it forced LMU to take a timeout trailing by 25 points (39-14). The Gaels took a 30-point, 55-25 lead with 30 seconds remaining and exited the quarter with a 55-28 advantage.
- QUARTER 4 | Both sides shot evenly through the final quarter's first four minutes, but the Gaels continued their trend of outscoring LMU in every quarter with a ratio of 15-10 in the fourth. SMC outscored the Lions 9-2 in the final six minutes of the quarter and SMC went on to win by the score of 70-38.
