GOLF | Slesinski Guides Gaels in Final Round at ASU Thunderbird

Michael Slesinski shot a 1-under in the third and final round on Saturday.

PHOENIX — Michael Slesinski led Saint Mary's in the final round of the ASU Thunderbird tournament with a 1-under par 70 score to help lift the Gaels one spot in the standings.

THE LEADERBOARD
The host No. 2 Arizona State won the tourney by a large margin, finishing 12 strokes ahead of second place No. 7 Texas. ASU's B-team also finished in the top-5 as did No. 37 UCLA and No. 1 Oklahoma State. Those five schools were the only teams to finish with combined below par totals.

Saint Mary's finished 10th out of the tough 14-team field and rose one spot from yesterday. The Gaels had their best round of the tournament on Saturday as they shot just 2-over, besting their middle round score by three strokes.

Slesinski tied for 24th in the 80-competitor field and completed the tournament at 1-over. Blake Hathcoat followed just a stroke back while Ethan Farnam ended play at 6-over. Ryan Grauman and Ethan Ashbrook each combined to shoot 10-over in the event.

ASU's Chun An Yu completed Saturday with a 3-under performance to take the medalist title with an overall 12-under total. Texas' Cole Hammer finished second at 8-under while Baylor's Colin Kober, Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn, and UCLA's Patrick Murphy all tied at 6-under.

FINAL ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

Slesinski and Farnam both recorded all pars from 2nd to 10th.
Grauman led the team with four birdies in the final round.
Slesinski had back-to-back birdies on 15th and 16th.
Farnam tied for second on par 3's with an even total during the tournament.
Hathcoat had the fourth best score on par 4's at 3-under.
