SAN FRANCISCO – The Gaels fought hard in the series finale and took the Dons to 12 innings, but ultimately fell 10-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gaels were in business early as they had a runner on second base two pitches into the game. Then, junior Ryan Novis hit a double to right field, but sophomore Gio Diaz was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. After junior Kevin Milam was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second, freshman Bryce Willits struck out on six pitches to end the inning.
- Saint Mary's got two more hits in the top of the second from senior Austin Chauvin and another single from Diaz. The Gaels eventually loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to score.
- The Dons struck in the bottom of the third, scoring a pair of runs on three hits including back-to-back doubles. All of their runs came with two outs. USF led 2-0 after three innings of play.
- San Francisco scored the following inning as the Dons' RJ Cordeiro hit a solo shot to right center with two outs and a 3-2 count. As a result, USF took a 3-0 lead.
- SMC loaded the bases once again in the top of the fifth and this time, Saint Mary's managed to score their first run of the game: junior Andrew Shebloski entered the game as a pinch hitter for junior Ryan Novis and immediately delivered a sac fly to left center. The Gaels trailed 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
- USF picked up their fourth run in their half of the fifth, scoring on an RBI single to left field. The Gaels limited the damage however, thanks, in part, to a big double play which consisted of a line out to sophomore Jack Murphy in right field then a strong throw to catch the Dons' runner attempting to reach third.
- Saint Mary's came roaring back in the seventh with a 4-run inning. With runners on first and second, Shebloski collected his second RBI of the game with a single to center field. Then, sophomore Gabe Giosso hit the first run of his career – a 3-run shot to left center – to give SMC a 5-4 advantage.
- The Dons strung together three separate singles in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at five apiece, but the Gaels tacked on a seventh run in the top of the eighth to regain the lead. USF came back in the bottom of the eighth and went up 9-6 after recording four hits and a number of sacrifice plays. Saint Mary's responded by tying the game 9-9 again in the ninth as the first four Gael batters of the inning reached base.
- The two teams remained locked in a tie until the bottom of the 12th inning when a double to center field scored the runner who had been walked the at-bat before and gave the Dons the 10-9 win in the 12th.
