BASE | Game Two Goes to LMU as Saint Mary's Falls 5-4

MORAGA, Calif.  – Trailing by four entering the fourth, Saint Mary's put three runs on the board to pull within one run after five. However, the Gaels put just one runner in scoring position in the final four innings, rendering their comeback bid just short, evening the series at one game apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LMU got on the board first in the second as Lambeau drove in Chavez with an RBI single to center field.
  • The Gaels responded in their half of the second as senior Conor Thane came through with a 2-out, RBI single to drive in senior Austin Chauvin from second.
  • The Lions pulled ahead once again in the third, scoring three runs off of two hits, two walks, and a hit-by pitch. However, the damage was limited as sophomore JC Santini picked off LMU's Chavez from second base to end the inning.
  • The Lions made it 5-1 in the following frame: with one out, Hirsch singled to third base on a slow roller towards third that never went foul. He then stole second and scored on an RBI single to center from Sogard.
  • The Gaels' comeback began in the bottom of the fourth: sophomore Jack Murphy led off the inning with a single to right field in the first pitch of his at-bat. Then, on a hit-and-run, Chauvin singled to left field. Murphy was running on the pitch and reached third, but ultimately scored when LMU's left fielder bobbled the ball and let it slip past him. The score was now 5-2.
  • SMC added two more in the fifth thanks to three straight hits to begin the frame. The third was a double from junior Joe Vranesh which cleared the bases, scoring junior Ryan Novis and freshman Bryce Willits. The Gaels eventually loaded the bases with one out, but could not capitalize and they exited the inning trailing 5-4.
  • The Saint Mary's pitching staff only surrendered one hit in the final four innings, but the Gaels were unable to push any runs across and they dropped the contest 5-4.
