BASE | Gaels Drop Series Finale 8-5 Against San Diego

MORAGA, Calif. – The Gaels took an early lead on Sunday afternoon, but couldn't hold on as they dropped the series finale 8-5 against San Diego.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Toreros got their offense going early on Sunday as a leadoff single followed by a deep single to right center put San Diego up 1-0 in the top of the second.
  • Freshman Bryce Willits walked to lead off the bottom of the second inning before the following two batters flied out. Sophomore JC Santini then lined it passed the third baseman to put runners on first and second with two outs. Junior Conor Thane came to bat and sent a single to right field that scored Willits from second to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Joe Vranesh followed up by sending his ninth home run of the season over the left field wall and put Saint Mary's ahead 4-1.
  • San Diego hit a single to begin the top of the third inning before another single to deep right field gave the Toreros their second run of the day.
  • Junior Ryan Novis singled a line drive up the middle to start off the bottom of the third followed by a single from Willits to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Gabe Giosso was then walked to load the bases before sophomore Gio Diaz hit into a fielder's choice that scored Novis and had the runner out at second.
  • San Diego strung together a number of singles in the top of the fifth inning to load the bases with two outs before Tora Otsuka lined a triple to deep right field that brought it three runs, but Otsuka was called out at third. The damage had been done and the two teams were tied at 5 apiece going into the bottom of the fifth.
  • With two outs and runners on first and second in the top of the sixth, San Diego took the 6-5 lead following a hit to left field that scored the lead runner.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, San Diego hit a double followed by a walk to put runners on first and second. An error on the throw to second advanced the runners to second and third before Shane McGuire singled to center field and scored both runners to put the Toreros up 8-5.
