The West Coast Conference announced the 2019-20 conference matchups for the men's basketball season on Thursday.
SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The West Coast Conference officially announced the conference matchups for the upcoming season as part of the 16-game format that was introduced last year as part of the Conference's Men's Basketball Enhancement Plan. With the new schedule, each team will play two less conference games and face two opponents only once during the regular season.
Next year, the Gaels will only take on Portland at home and Pepperdine on the road. They will play the remaining seven conference teams twice during the season.
Last season, Saint Mary's did not host Loyola Marymount nor travel to Portland under the first year of the Enhancement Plan.
The conference matchups are determined through a formula that includes 2017-18 team RPI and the 2018-19 team NET rankings, last year's West Coast Conference tournament seedings, and a spring survey of the league's 10 head coaches. These schedule initiatives demonstrate the league-wide commitment by West Coast Conference Presidents and Athletic Directors to adopt an innovative approach to advance men's basketball on the national stage as a multiple NCAA bid Conference.
The WCC sent two men's basketball teams to the NCAA Tournament last year with the Gaels and Zags each returning to the Big Dance. Saint Mary's finished the season ranked No. 35 in NET and earned an 11-seed in the tournament.
The scheduling matchups for men's basketball do not impact the women's basketball schedule which will continue the traditional 18-game, double round-robin league slate in 2019-20.
West Coast Conference play will begin on Thursday, January 2, 2020. Specific dates and times for each game will be announced later this summer after the conference's league schedule is finalized.
