MORAGA, Calif. – After weeks of training with the Australian Gems, Saint Mary's women's basketball's Sam Simons will head to the FIBA U19 World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand this weekend.
Placed in Group C, Australia will face the likes of Hungary, Korea, and the USA in the group stage before heading to the knockout round next week. The Gems will face the USA in their first game on July 19 at 10:15pm PT. The live stream can viewed for free here:
"We have a really tough pool," said Simons. "USA, Hungary and Korea play three completely different styles of basketball so we will have to do a good job of adjusting each game. Our team atmosphere is great, we're all ready to finally start playing in the World Cup after a couple of long weeks of preparation."
Simons has been a big part of her team's success in recent years, leading the U18 group to a third-place finish at the FIBA World Championships in November and winning the entire World Cup with her U17 squad.
"U17's was absolutely incredible, winning it all; it is something that I will cherish forever," said Simons. "Obviously the most enjoyable thing about that was getting the gold, but also getting to experience international basketball at such a high level for the first time. I'm looking forward to bringing that experience to our World Cup this week, and hopefully getting a great result!"
