Gaels Rolling with 3-Game Win Streak…
The 2025-26 season has been one of runs for the Gaels, starting off 5-0 before dropping four straight to sit just one game above .500. They were able to respond though, now having won three consecutive games to improve to 8-4 on the season. Over their latest win streak, the Gaels have shot a combined 48.3% from the field, 43% from three and 77% from the free throw line to showcase a balanced and efficient offense. Turnovers have continued to plague the Gaels, averaging 20.6 per game, but their efficiency has allowed them to hang onto late leads, winning their last three games by an average of five points.
After their defeat to 16th ranked USC to start their three-game road trip last week, Saint Mary's responded with wins over San Jose State and Grand Canyon to end the week. The offense sputtered for both the Gaels and the Spartans Thursday night in San Jose but the Saint Mary's defense kept San Jose State off the scoreboard for the final 1:32 of the fourth quarter. Free throws from Emily Foy and Addi Wedin helped ice the game in the closing seconds. Ending the week on Sunday, Saint Mary's created new memories in Phoenix where they took down Grand Canyon 62-54 behind a season high 18 points from Malia Latu. The Gaels scored 15+ points in each quarter and shot a season best 55% from the field for one of their best offensive performances of the season.
The Gaels had just one game last week, playing host to Fresno State, where they took down the Bulldogs 60-57 to extend their winning streak to three games. They were efficient again offensively, shooting 48% from the field while holding Fresno State 37%. Addi Wedin went for a career high 17 points in the win and was perfect from three-point range, ending the night 3-for-3. Emily Foy added ten points as ten players finished the game with at least two points, outsourcing the Bulldogs 27-16 in bench points.
Addi Wedin Posts Career High 17 Points in Win over Fresno State…
Thanks to a career high 17 points in their three-point win over Fresno State, redshirt junior guard Addi Wedin was named this week's Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week. Since returning from injury, Wedin has proven to be one of the team's best overall scorers, being able to convert at all three levels and providing vital offensive spark. After her 17-point performance against the Bulldogs, Wedin now leads the team with nine points per game while shooting 48% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc.
In the midst of the Gaels' three-game win streak, Wedin has started in all three of those games and is averaging 12 points and shooting 75% from three-point range. As Wedin continues to find her footing and get back into playing shape after sitting out the 2024-25 season, she'll prove to be a key piece to a balanced and efficient Saint Mary's offense.
Series History…
Saint Mary's and New Mexico State have only met once all-time in a road contest for the Gaels back in 1989. The Aggies won that matchup by a score of 81-64. Despite the defeat, Saint Mary's won 21 games that season and went 12-2 in WCC play. The Gaels will have the edge on paper this time around, boasting an 8-4 overall record compared to the Aggies who are just 3-6 through the first two months of the season.
ABOUT THE AGGIES (3-7, 0-0 C-USA)
New Mexico State will travel to Moraga for the first time in program history and enter Saturday with a 3-7 overall record. The Aggies are closing in on the end of their non-conference schedule as they'll take on Saint Mary's this Saturday and then return home to host Eastern New Mexico before the start of conference play on January 2nd. The Aggies hosted UC Irvine earlier in the week but fell 83-66 to end a two-game win streak.
The Aggies have had a tough start to their 2025-26 campaign as all but one of their now seven defeats have been in double-digits. Their one single-digit defeat came during Thanksgiving week in a 57-58 loss to fellow WCC member San Diego. New Mexico State is averaging just 56 points per game with the bulk of their scoring coming from senior forward Lucia Yenes. The four-year veteran is averaging a career high 14.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game and has been in double-figures in all but two games this season.
The Aggies were picked to finish 10th in this year's preseason poll after going 10-8 in conference play a season ago. Jody Adams is in her fourth year as head coach for New Mexico State and holds a record 52-58. She made previous stops as head coach at Murray State and most recently Wichita State where she spent nine seasons with the Shockers and won 170 games.
