The West Coast Conference officially announced the men's basketball conference schedules for all 10 member schools today.
SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The Gaels' men's basketball conference schedule has been officially released as announced today by the West Coast Conference office. The team will play 16 games against their WCC foes during January and February before the conference tournament tips off in early March.
Saint Mary's will begin their conference slate with back-to-back away games at San Francisco and Pacific on Jan. 2 and 4, respectively. The team plays their first home WCC game the following week when they host BYU on Jan. 9 followed by another home contest against Santa Clara on Jan. 11.
The Gaels will have their first "bye" week following their home series as they only play at Pepperdine on Jan. 18 the following week. SMC then returns home to face USF, flies to Loyola Marymount, then takes on Portland at home before heading off for a big road game at BYU on Feb. 1.
After a Feb. 6 contest in San Diego, the Gaels return home for their toughest home challenge of the season as they host Gonzaga on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Saint Mary's plays three more consecutive home games against Pacific, Loyola Marymount, and San Diego, with their matchup against the Toreros being Senior Day in Moraga on Feb. 22. SMC closes out the schedule at Santa Clara followed by at Gonzaga on Feb. 29.
The 16-game conference schedule is part of the new scheduling format intended to strengthen the resumes of WCC teams for the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. It was first implemented last year and as a result, the Gaels will not play Portland on the road or Pepperdine at home in the upcoming season. Additionally, all times are still to be determined.
