ON A HEATER
Over the last six contests, sophomore point guard Joshua Dent has demonstrated why the Gael staff named him as starter to open the year. The Wollongong, NSW, Australia native has averaged 16.3 points per game and 5.8 assists per game, while shooting 51.6% from the field and 45.2% from three in that stretch. Down the stretch, the Gaels will continue to lean on Dent, knowing now that he can shoulder the heavy load despite being just a sophomore.
ABOUT THE TOREROS
After finishing in the bottom spot of the WCC a year ago, the Toreros of San Diego, have taking positive strides in 2025-26, opening the campaign at 10-14 after just six total wins last year, and 4-7 in WCC play after just two conference wins a year ago. Fourth year Head Coach Steve Lavin has his team in eighth place in the WCC standings, and looks for them to make a strong push in the back half of conference play to sneak into the upper half of the WCC ranks. Heading into the upcoming matchup with the Gaels, the Toreros might have some tired legs, coming off of back-to-back OT contests last week. That said, they will use their depth to try and counteract that fatigue, with a roster of 20 student-athletes, 18 of which have appeared in a game, and 11 who are averaging at least 12 minutes played per contest. As such, USD is averaging 29.2 bench points per game, the second best in the WCC. Despite the explosiveness off the bench, the Toreros are led by their starting point guard, Ty-Laur Johnson. The former ACC player with stops at Louisville and Wake Forest has become the focal point of the USD attack, averaging 15.7 points and 4.7 assists per contest, both team-highs. This upcoming meeting will be the 99th all-time between the Gaels and Toreros, with Saint Mary's leading the all-time series 62-36. San Diego's last win against Saint Mary's came back in 2014, and their last win in Moraga was back in 2007.
ABOUT THE DONS
The Gaels and Dons will renew hostilities for the second time this season, after Saint Mary's defeated USF at the Sobrato Center on January 13. Since that defeat at the hands of the Gaels, the Dons have gone 2-2 in their next four, and will take on LMU on Wednesday evening before seeing the Gaels on Saturday. Currently sitting at 14-10 and 6-5 in conference play, San Francisco is tied for fourth place in the WCC with Pacific, who they defeated last week. Fourth year Head Coach Chris Gerlufsen has never experienced a sub-20 win season at the helm for the Dons, but will need to win six of his final seven (not including postseason) to reach that mark here in 2025-26. In their last meeting against Saint Mary's, USF had four score in double-figures, led by Tyrone Riley, who dropped 16 on 6-9 shooting from the field, and a 12 point, 11 rebounds showing from David Fuchs. It was not enough, however, to stop a 40 point combo from Paulius Murauskas (21 pts) and Joshua Dent (19 pts), to go along with a 10 points, 18 rebounds, six assist onslaught from Andrew McKeever. This will be the 195th meeting between the Gaels and Dons, with San Francisco holding a slight 102-92 margin. The Gaels have won 12 of the last 13 meetings against USF, and haven't lost to the Dons at home since 2003.
